Vegetable - Mint Leaves - Allergies

Mint Leaves

  1. Side effects and Caution:
    • There are a few cautions regarding the use of mint oil: it is not recommended to use mint oil during pregnancy and lactation or to apply it on babies' skin. For external use, the mint oil must be diluted, no more then 30 drops of oil should be used in a skin cream.
    • Mint contains high levels of rosmarinic acid, an antioxidant that quenches free radicals and reduces allergy symptoms by inhibiting COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes. A study published in the 2004 issue of the journal "Biofactors" found that 50 milligrams of rosmarinic acid per day for 21 days reduced levels of allergy-related white blood cells, called eosinophils, and inflammatory molecules and decreased allergy symptoms significantly. In a laboratory animal section of the study, topical application of rosmarinic acid reduced skin inflammation within five hours. Researchers concluded that rosmarinic acid may offer benefits for the treatment of seasonal allergies due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

Vegetable - Spinach Leaves - Allergies

Spinach Leaves

  1. Side effects & Safety profile :
    • Reheating of spinach left-over may cause conversion of nitrates into nitrites and nitrosamines by certain bacteria that thrive on pre-prepared nitrate-rich foods, such as spinach and many other green vegetables. These poisonous compounds may be harmful to health, especially in children.
    • Phytates and dietary fibre present in the leaves may interfere with the bio-availability of iron, calcium and magnesium.
    • Because of its high vitamin K content, patients taking anti-coagulants such as "warfarin" are encouraged to avoid spinach in their food since it interferes with drug metabolism.
    • Spinach contains oxalic acid, a naturally-occurring substance found in some vegetables, which may crystallize as oxalate stones in the urinary tract in some people. People with known oxalate urinary tract stones are advised to avoid eating certain vegetables belonging to Amaranthaceae and Brassica family. Adequate intake of water is therefore advised to maintain normal urine output.
    • It may also contain goitrogens, which may interfere with thyroid hormone production and can cause thyroxine hormone deficiency in individuals with thyroid dysfunction.

Vegetable - Beet Root - Allergies

Beet root

  1. Fever, Chills, and Rashes :
    • Although these side effects are infrequently reported, some people have reported experiencing fever, chills, and rashes after consuming beet juice. If you think you're suffering these effects from drinking beet juice, stop drinking it. If the problem persists, see a doctor. Rashes may indicate an allergy.
    • Sometimes detoxification and cleansing creates temporary symptoms such as a low fever or chills. This is one possible explanation of why beet juice may create this side effect. If it improves cellular respiration as conventional science states, one possible theory is that the cells are better capable of releasing stored waste, and if many cells release waste at once, it can cause slight flu-like symptoms. Of course, you could really have the flu, or possibly another illness, so if the symptoms persist after stopping the beet juice, see your physician.
  2. Vocal Cord Problems :A feeling of tightness in the throat or trouble speaking can be a side effect of drinking too much beet juice. Vegetable - Gherkins - Allergies

Gherkins

  1. Digestive Upset :One potential side effect of consuming too many pickles or too much pickle juice is digestive upset. Consuming large amounts of any food can upset your digestive system, causing side effects as your body adapts to the new food, but pickles might prove especially upsetting.
  2. Bloating :Another possible side effect of eating too many pickles is bloating and water retention. Pickles -- especially dill pickles -- contain high amounts of sodium. Your body reacts to this high sodium intake by retaining water to maintain the osmotic balance of your body -- the concentration of salt within your blood plasma and fluids. As a result, you might experience noticeable swelling, especially in your extremities, which might lead to some discomfort. If you experience severe bloating, consult a medical professional about the potential benefits of diuretics to ease your discomfort.
  3. High Blood Pressure :Some individuals might experience a temporary spike in blood pressure after consuming a high-salt meal heavy with pickles and pickle juice. Excess fluid retention after sodium consumption can increase the volume of blood plasma in your body, leading to an increase in blood pressure for some individuals, according to the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University. If you already suffer from high blood pressure, or hypertension, or have a family history, avoid consuming large amounts of pickles and pickle juice to avoid excess salt consumption.
  4. Increased Kidney Workload :Consuming large amounts of pickles and pickle juice might also temporarily increase the workload on your kidneys. A primary function of your kidney cells is to act as a filter, keeping nutrients your body needs in your bloodstream while allowing unwanted chemicals to exit your body in your urine. After you consume a high-salt meal, such as pickles and pickle juice, your kidneys must work to remove excess salt from your body to help maintain normal blood volume and pressure. If you suffer from an existing kidney condition, talk to your doctor about the safety of consuming high-salt foods such as pickles and pickle juice.

Vegetable - Sweet Corn - Allergies

Sweet Corn

  1. Minor effects:
    • Although corn isn't fattening, it is a starchy vegetable, meaning it does contain carbohydrates. Consuming too many carbohydrates and overall calories can lead to weight and fat gain. If you're overweight, the American Dietetic Association encourages you to reduce your daily calorie intake by 500 to 1,000 calories per day for a weight loss of one to two pounds per week. The American Dietetic Association also reports that reducing carbohydrates rather than calories or fat may help with short-term weight loss, and reducing your carbohydrate intake results in a reduced overall energy intake, which is effective for weight and fat loss.
    • Corn allergies are seen in adults as well as in children. When a person becomes allergic to corn, his body develops antibodies against corn proteins. Therefore, as soon as the person consumes corn products or even inhales corn particles or pollen, the immune system reacts against it, which gives rise to allergic reactions on the body. As corn is consumed by a large number of people, the number of corn allergy cases is increasing.
    • Symptoms of corn allergy vary from very mild to severe ones. They are also found to differ from person to person. When a person is over sensitive to corn, consuming even a small quantity of corn can result in development of symptoms. Let us have a look at the minor symptoms of corn allergy.
      • Vomiting
      • Gas
      • Rash
      • Abdominal pain and bloating
      • Dizziness
      • Nausea
      • Itchy skin
      • Swelling of tongue and mouth
      • Fever
  2. Major effects:Apart from these, sometimes severer symptoms are also observed. They include:
    • Diarrhoea
    • Urinary tract infection (UTI)
    • Allergic asthma
    • Mood swing
    • Arthritis
    • Sudden drop in blood pressure
    • Difficulty in breathing
    • Tightness in chest
    • Migraine headache

Vegetable - Capsicum - Allergies

Capsicum

  1. Side effects :
    1. Surgery :Capsicum might increase bleeding during and after surgery. Stop using capsicum at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.
    2. If you are breast-feeding, using capsicum on your skin is likely safe. But it is possibly unsafe for your baby if you take capsicum by mouth. Skin problems (dermatitis) have been reported in breast-fed infants when mothers eat foods heavily spiced with capsicum peppers.
    3. Children : Applying capsicum to the skin of children under two years of age is possibly unsafe. Not enough is known about the safety of giving capsicum to children by mouth. Don't do it.
    4. Damaged or broken skin : Don't use capsicum on damaged or broken skin.
  2. Safety profile :The pungent level in bell peppers is almost zero "Scoville heat units"(SHU). However, their seeds and central core may contain some amount of capsaicin, which when eaten may cause severe irritation and hot sensation to mouth, tongue and throat.Note some of these points while handling capsicum annum members in general:
    1. Capsaicin in chilies, especially cayenne peppers, initially elicit inflammation when it comes in contact with the mucus membranes of oral cavity, throat and stomach, and soon produces severe burning sensation that is perceived as ‘hot' through free nerve endings in the mucosa. Eating cold yogurt helps reduce this burning pain by diluting capsaicin concentration, and preventing its contact with stomach walls.
    2. Avoid touching eyes with pepper contaminated fingers. If done so, rinse eyes thoroughly in cold water to reduce irritation.
    3. They may aggravate underlying gastro-esophageal reflux (GER) condition.

Vegetable - Tomato - Allergies

Tomato

  1. Gastro-intestinal Effects :Tomatoes are acidic vegetables, so eating too many of them can aggravate preexisting medical conditions, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, also known as acid reflux -- a condition in which the digestive acids in your stomach rise and leak through the muscle acting as a valve between your stomach and esophagus, burning your esophagus. Tomatoes, especially in great quantities, can make this worse. According to the Mayo Clinic, the seeds in tomatoes can also aggravate diverticulitis, by lodging in the diverticula, small pouches formed in your digestive tract, causing inflammation and infection.
  2. Vitamin Overdose :It is possible to overdose on certain vitamins and nutrients if you consume large amounts of tomatoes in high concentrations. One medium-size tomato contains 1,025 IU of vitamin A, just under half of your daily recommendation of vitamin A. If you were to eat 10 tomatoes in a day, you would exceed your vitamin A upper limit, which could lead to nausea and headache, according to the Linus Pauling Institute. A medium tomato also contains around 17 mg of vitamin C, about a tenth of your upper limit. Eating too many tomatoes and causing a vitamin C overdose might lead to the development of kidney stones.
  3. Hypersensitivity :A tomato allergy is a type 1 hypersensitivity to tomatoes. Type 1 allergies are commonly known as contact allergies. When a person with this type of allergy comes into contact with an allergen such as a tomato, histamines are released into exposed areas such as the skin, nose, and respiratory and digestive tracts. In turn, this causes an allergic reaction.
  4. Cross-reaction :Despite the fact that tomatoes and tomato-based products are some of the most heavily consumed foods in the western diet, tomato allergies are extremely rare. An individual with a tomato allergy is also prone to allergic reactions with other nightshades, including potatoes, tobacco, and eggplant. Often, people with a tomato allergy will have a cross-reaction to latex as well (latex-fruit syndrome).

Vegetable - Tapioca - Allergies

Tapioca Root

  1. Side Effects :
    • the Tapioca has small quantities of cyanide and should never be eaten raw. If eaten raw, the natural toxicity of this plant can cause abdominal pains, nausea, and death. It's worth noting, however, the cyanide level is much higher in the skin than in the rest of the plant. The process to disperse the cyanide includes peeling the vegetable, sun-drying it, boiling it in water, and then cooking it. Only then is Tapioca safe to eat.
    • Also, since tapioca does have a very high carbohydrate and caloric content, if you are trying to lose weight, it might not be the best food to add to your diet.
