  1. Selection :Fresh pods are available in the market year around. When you buy bitter melons, look for the fresh, bright pods that feature dark-green color, without any cuts, or blemishes on their surfaces. Choose young, tender and immature pods. Immature-fruits are least bitter; and their bitterness rises as the pods mature.
  2. Storage :At home, fresh bitter gourd pods are placed in the plastic zip pouch and stored in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator, where they stay afresh for up to a week.
  3. Safety :
    To avoid Poisoning:
    1. Taste a small piece of the gourd to make sure it is not unusually bitter, before making juice.
    2. Discard all excessively bitter gourd or juice.
    3. Not mix the juice of gourds with other juices, such as that of bitter gourd, so as not to mask the taste if it has gone bad.

Bitter gourd

  1. Toxicity in Children : Sloan-Kettering notes that the seed coverings of bitter melon, known as arils, can have toxic effects on children. It can lead to vomiting, diarrhoea and even death.
  2. Warning for Pregnant Women : Pregnant women should not use bitter melon in any form. It can trigger contractions, and according to WebMD, animal studies indicate it can induce abortion. Breastfeeding women should also refrain from using bitter melon as it is not known whether it would have negative effects.
  3. Unpleasant Drug Interactions : People with diabetes who receive drug therapy to control their blood sugar levels should not take bitter melon. Medications of concern include insulin, glipizide, glimepiride and pioglitazone. When used in combination with bitter melon, these treatments may significantly increase your risk of developing hypoglycemia.
