  1. Selection :Fresh pods are available in the market year around. When you buy bitter melons, look for the fresh, bright pods that feature dark-green color, without any cuts, or blemishes on their surfaces. Choose young, tender and immature pods. Immature-fruits are least bitter; and their bitterness rises as the pods mature.
  2. Storage :At home, fresh bitter gourd pods are placed in the plastic zip pouch and stored in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator, where they stay afresh for up to a week.
  3. Safety :
    To avoid Poisoning:
    1. Taste a small piece of the gourd to make sure it is not unusually bitter, before making juice.
    2. Discard all excessively bitter gourd or juice.
    3. Not mix the juice of gourds with other juices, such as that of bitter gourd, so as not to mask the taste if it has gone bad.

  1. Pregnancy : Fresh pods are an excellent source of folates, contain about 72 µg/100g (Provides 18% of RDA). Folate helps reduce the incidence of neural tube defects in the newborns when taken by mothers during early pregnancy.
  2. Diabetic :It has blood-purifying properties. As a result, the juice is used in the treatment of blood disorders like blood boils and itching due to blood poisoning. Have it little by little on an empty stomach daily, in 4-6 months you will see enhancement in your state. Bitter gourd notably contains phyto-nutrient, polypeptide-P; a plant insulin known to lower blood sugar levels. In addition, it composes hypoglycemic agent called charantin. Charantin increases glucose uptake and glycogen synthesis in the cells of liver, muscle and adipose tissue. Together, these compounds are thought to be responsible for reduction of blood sugar levels in the treatment of type-2 diabetes.
  3. Immune booster: A glass of bitter gourd juice in the morning can help to strengthen your immune system and increase your body’s fighting power against infection. Researchers hypothesize that bitter melon is as an immuno modulator. One clinical trial found limited evidence that bitter melon might improve immune cell function in people with cancer.
  4. Good for stomach:It contains cellulose which is a very good source of fiber thus preventing constipation. It also good digestive agent and helps in stimulating the secretion of gastric juices.
